How to customise your clothing

var addthis_config = { "data_track_clickback":true, ui_language: "en" }

if($.cookie("show_edit") == 'yes') {
$('div.moderate_box_open').css('display', 'block');
}

google_ad_channel = AB_cat_channel + AB_unit_channel;
google_language = "en";
google_ad_region = 'test';

Ever suffered from not being able to find the ideal T-shirt on the high street? Many of us go shopping with a clear idea in our heads about the exact qualities our purchase will possess. Unfortunately, we don't always end up finding the ultimate treasure and settle for a compromise based on factors like lack of choice, size or price. A failed shopping spree is a good reason to start customising your clothing. Customising can also save you from having to buy new in the first place.

Before you get started

You don't require many tools to get started. Think about investing in a good pair of fabric scissors, fabric paint and some stamps or stencils. If you're hoping to add buttons or patches to your item, make sure you have good quality needles and thread for sewing with.

Before attempting to personalise your favourite item of clothing, practice on some old scraps of fabric or second hand T-shirts from a local charity shop. You don't want to end up destroying what was meant to be your ultimate outfit.

The cutting approach

google_ad_channel = "7940249670, " + AB_cat_channel + AB_unit_channel;
google_language = "en";
google_ad_region = 'test';

Using scissors to customise a piece of clothing sounds drastic but can bare great results. Scissors can be used to obtain frayed edges, deeper necklines, funky cut outs or shorter lengths. For example, if your old jeans are really worn out where they've been dragging along the pavement, transform them into a pair of shorts. Denim cut offs are a trend featured in many magazines, and one the high street is popularising too. Get rid of the stain on the front of your T-shirt by cutting it out to make way for a plunging V-neckline. The same goes if the best shirt you can find on the high street comes with a round neckline but you really fancy a V-neckline.

Using paint

Plain clothes can be updated with a touch of paint. If you're bored with the array of block-coloured T-shirts in your wardrobe, look into updating them with colourful fresh patterns or text. Stencils and stamps are readily available or can be designed by creative individuals. Perhaps you have a friend who studies art or graphic design and can help you out. An even easier approach is to literally just splash your clothing with paint. The resulting effect can really make you stand out and is a particularly great look for club nights.

Creative activities are often more fun when undertaken in a group. Use customising your clothes as a great reason to get your friends together for an evening of fun and games resulting in long term benefits. Have a competition to see who comes up with the best design, or work around a set theme.

Customising clothes takes time and effort that not all of us are willing to sacrifice. It also requires a high degree of creativity and precision that we're not all born with. Thankfully the fashion industry has responded to society's cries for original DIY-inspired clothing and now offers vast collections of graphic T-shirts and customised pieces to choose from. Some companies will even let you design your own shirt online.

If you are a painter, beader, sculptor, writer, or photographer, whatever art you practice, growing your creative muscle requires challenge.  Find someone who does what you do, only better, or find someone who does what you do only differently.  Did you find this person in an association, a book, a magazine, or an Internet site?  All those are good places.

An Association can bring you information on new products, tips for efficiency, business assistance, community and special classes.  All of this may be what helps you.  The classes may give you your best creative challenge because you will be able to ask questions and see what is happening as a project progresses.  Sometimes asking questions is what you need.  It can give you a brand new idea or get you past a spot you were stuck in.  Maybe teach something you never had the skill for.

google_ad_channel = "7940249670, " + AB_cat_channel + AB_unit_channel;
google_language = "en";
google_ad_region = 'test';

A book can be a great motivator.  Seeing work that is different than your own in a picture can be just as motivating as seeing it in person.  You have in a book the ability to pick it up when ever you want and really study the photo or the words.   Often the book will have step-by-step instructions for a technique, which can also get that creative exercise going.  Even if you have taken a class having a book that refers to what was in the class will reinforce what you have learned.

An Internet site may have a downloadable book or class.  Sometimes you can find free downloads and sometimes they will have a cost.  But to get the creative boost you are looking for a cost is well worth it.  This is also good as you are able to go back to it again to review.

A magazine is a briefer albeit just as nice way to get a creative charge.  Seeing what has been put in a magazine is often what is found to be really of the best.  The photos or the articles will most often be what is new as well.  Again, this is something, if you purchased the magazine, which you can refer to again and again.  Even going to a library and looking at many magazines would be a great boost.

So even if you are an expert, having the latest information can take you to a new level.  The class that shakes up your creative path and lets you look at things in a new way.  The book that bugs you with something that you had not been using and makes you want to try it or, the magazines that contain pictures or articles in abundance which are inspiring.  Even an expert needs a creative treat.

If you're a beginner to the world of sewing machines, you'll most likely want a machine which is user-friendly, highly-functional and has the versatility to take on small or larger projects. The Brother CS6000i Computerized Sewing Machine fits these criteria.

Brother has created the CS6000i with ease of use as the top priority. Being fully computerized, it makes the experience of sewing as user-friendly as possible whether you're quilting or creating some home fashions. But they haven't skimped on features and accessories; this machine has a staggering 60 stitches built-in and a wide range of bonus accessories which include various types of presser feet and needle sets.

google_ad_channel = "7940249670, " + AB_cat_channel + AB_unit_channel;
google_language = "en";
google_ad_region = 'test';

Flexible Control

Back then, you had to put your foot down on a foot pedal to start up a sewing machine. The Brother CS6000i gives you the flexibility of either using a foot pedal or pressing a button to start and stop the machine.

I'm pleased to see that Brother has included a slider for speed control. This isn't usually a feature which is offered by budget sewing machines. This slider allows you to set the max speed which the machine will sew at so you can sew at an appropriate speed to suit your level of sewing experience or the type of project you are working on.

60 stitches built-in

There are a total of 60 stitches available, which is pretty incredible for a machine at this price point. These include a range of utility stitches, decorative stitches, heirloom stitches and more. In terms of adjustments, you can adjust the width and length of stitches up to 7mm using the LCD panel.

For your convenience, Brother have put an image of the available stitches onto the front of the machine so you don't have the inconvenience of needing to flick through the user manual when you want to change to a different stitch type.

LCD Panel

The LCD panel makes operating the machine straightforward. The four buttons allow you to alter the stitching settings to your preference. A letter on the display indicates which presser foot you need to use for each stitch type.

Accessories

It seems Brother thought of everything when it comes to the CS6000i. An impressive range of accessories are included which include 9 different presser feet, a set of needles, bobbins, quilting guide and a hard case cover.

Summary

The Brother CS6000i Computerized Sewing Machine is certainly the best value for money sewing machine currently in the market especially when considering the wide range of accessories which are provided. Being lightweight allows you to easily move it room-to-room or take it travelling without problems.

The extensive range of features and functions of the Brother CS6000i make it a good choice for beginners as well as more experienced sewers which need a functional computerized machine which can handle a wide range of projects.
